Guild Program and Events Calendar 2023

Regular Guild Meeting Programs

(General topics, program titles may vary; Dates or program order are subject to change, watch the listserv and the Next Meeting box on the home page for updates):

January 3: Meeting is canceled.

February 7: Combining Drafts & Skeleton Tie-Ups: This round table discussion will cover two short topics: 1) Combining multiple drafts in the same project can expand the complexity of your weaving and enhance the finished object but can also lead to differential shrinkage and undesirable results. We’ll share tips for combining multiple drafts in the same project, such as how to plan a hem to work at the same sett as the body of the project and how to plan stripes or selvedges in a different draft than the rest of the project. 2) Skeleton tie-ups can be used to adapt a draft to use fewer treadles in exchange for using multiple treadles at once. We’ll discuss how to examine a draft to see if a skeleton tie-up is possible. For (1) bring your questions and examples of draft combinations and hems that did or didn’t work well, and for (2) everyone please look in your books and try to bring at least one example of a skeleton tie-up, whether you’ve used one or not.

March 7: Video on the topic of lace (Sally).

April 4: Lace Weaves I: Loom-controlled lace structures (huck, Atwater-Bronson, and Swedish lace) (Cheryl and Sue).

May 2: Lace Weaves II: Hand-manipulated lace techniques (leno, Spanish lace, Danish medallion and Brook’s bouquet) (Cheryl, Sue, and Erika). This program will be partly in demo/workshop format: Erika will share her presentation on this topic from Convergence; Cheryl will bring a loom and demonstrate techniques; Sue will share inspirational ideas for using these techniques. You are encouraged to bring a small portable (table) or rigid heddle loom if you have one, already warped for plain weave at 8-10″ weaving width and with a short (1-2″) plain weave header already woven, as well as a few bobbins of weft. A small stick shuttle, a pick-up stick, and a crochet hook will also be useful. But don’t worry if you can’t, as there will be opportunities to try the techniques on Cheryl’s loom. Please also bring any examples of these laces that you have.

June 6: Project Planning and Adapting Drafts to Projects: Round table discussion: please bring notes, examples, questions, and your experiences with designing projects for weaving. Topics may include adapting drafts to a desired weaving width (pattern repeats, pattern expansion/reduction, selvedge treatments), planning for hems, and more.

July 4: Holiday, no meeting.

August 1: Transparencies: Cheryl will present a program on weaving sheer fabrics with shaped inlays suitable for curtains, wall hangings, and other decorative uses

September 5: Daryl Lancaster’s Slice & Dice Technique for repurposing handwoven fabric scraps: We’ll watch her YouTube playlist on the subject and discuss using other resources (her Handwoven articles, website gallery, and blog posts). Bring any examples you have made, or scraps that might be good candidates for a project.

October 3: Theo Moorman’s Inlay Technique: Sue G. will present a biography of Moorman, Cheryl W. will discuss her book and work from a technical perspective, and Sue, Cheryl, and Joan Y. will have samples to share.

November 7: Krokbragd: Larisa M. will present a project report on making a Krokbragd bag (actually two twin-ish bags) and an overview of history and variations in this structure. We are considering expanding this idea to a series of programs on weaving for a purpose: fabric characteristics suitable for various uses such as clothing, outerwear, upholstery, bags, and more.

December 9: Holiday Potluck Lunch: NOTE CHANGE IN DATE/TIME AND LOCATION. Our December meeting will be a holiday potluck lunch at Larisa’s house on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 12:30 pm. Details and directions have been posted to the listserv. We’ll also have Show & Tell and discuss programs for our 2024 schedule..
