Dates or program order are subject to change. Watch the email group and the Next Meeting box on the home page for updates.
January 12: Tartans: a brief history and field trip report: Kathryn will lead a report by the October 2024 field trip participants on their visit to the Tartans Museum in Franklin, NC and what they learned about tartans. We’ll also discuss naming an Exhibition Coordinator for our show at the library later this year.
February 9: Mixing It Up: Cheryl will lead a program about using several different yarns in one warp. This type of warp can help you use small random skeins in your stash, or leftovers from other projects. Fancy knitting yarns, ribbons, eyelash and more can all be mixed for texture and color. There will be lots of samples and cloth to touch and feel including examples of what works and what not to do.
March 9: Deflected Doubleweave: Amalia will talk about this weaving technique in which two layers of cloth are interlaced as they are woven to create intriguing variations in color and/or texture.
April 13: Weaving Resources: This program will be several short topics of interest to beginning weavers as well as a roundtable discussion of weaving resources. Cheryl will give an overview of the various types of looms and weaving terminology. Joan S. will discuss the calculations for planning a warp and estimates of yarn needed for warp and weft. Everyone is asked to contribute to a discussion of weaving resources: please bring one or two favorite textbooks or pattern books as well as information about favorite sources for yarns, loom parts, and accessories.
May 11: Finishing: Knots and Fringes: Sue will present a variety of ways to finish the edges of our cloth.
June 8: Heroines of Hue: Joan Y. will talk about weavers and dyers who inspire her use of color.
July 13: Fibonacci, Golden Ratio, and other Golden Rules: Sue will talk about numerical sequences and ratios that are useful in handweaving and design.
August 10: Displaying Textiles: This program will focus on how to hang or otherwise display the specific pieces that will go into our show at the library. Please bring your pieces for the show.
September 14: Photographing Textiles: Wade Sheldon will turn our meeting space into a photo studio for the afternoon and photograph pieces for our members’ show while discussing his approach to lighting and photographing textiles.
October 12: Cotton from Field to Yarn: Michael White will give a presentation on cotton harvesting and yarn production, including videos of harvest, commercial spinning, and blue jeans production.
November 9: Exhibition Opening and Reception: Please join us at the Athens-Clarke County Library Main Branch (2025 Baxter Street, Athens, GA) between 3 and 4:30 pm for a reception to mark the opening of our exhibition Over and Under: Woven by the Athena Weavers. Enjoy light refreshments in the lobby, then view the exhibition in the Bogue Art Gallery on the 2nd floor. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome. This reception is in lieu of our regular November meeting. The exhibition runs through January 11, 2026.
December 14: Holiday Lunch: location and time TBD.
