Dates or program order are subject to change. Watch the email group and the Next Meeting box on the home page for updates.
January 11: Historical Dye Plants: Donna will compare dye plants that were grown in the past for commerce with those that were used by people for their own woven fabric for use in their daily lives.
February 8: Wedge Weave: Sue will discuss this technique in which weft is woven diagonally across the warp, distorting the warp and creating scalloped edges and distinctive zigzag designs. You can bring prepared small tapestry looms to try this technique during the meeting.
March 8: Show and Tell and Questions: Bring your recent woven pieces for a traditional show and tell as well as pieces that didn’t turn out quite as you hoped. We’ll share gentle suggestions for ways to learn from mistakes and surprises.
April 12: Loom Reconstruction: Mary and Joshua will share their adventures in bringing an inherited loom into working condition.
May 10: Indigo Dye Day: We’ll meet at Donna’s house to experience indigo dyeing in action. The event will run from 10 am to 3 pm, but you can come and go as needed. Bring your lunch and a chair, or run out for lunch during the noon break. Prior to the meeting, she’ll share instructions for preparing fiber, yarn, and cloth that you can bring and add to the dye vats. This event is for group members only, and details and location information will be sent via email.
June 14: Intro to Spinning for Weavers: Kathryn and Joan S. will give a hands-on introduction to spinning animal and plant fibers and paper. Even if a new spinning hobby is not in your future, every weaver can benefit from knowing the properties of spun fiber and how the spinning process affects your yarn choices and finished woven products. If you happen to have a drop spindle, bring it!
July 12: Norwich Textiles: A Global Story 1750-1840: Cheryl will give an overview of the textile history of her home town in England with emphasis on its huge industry based completely on handspun and handwoven cloth in the time period before the Industrial Revolution.
